SimCity is a city building simulation game developed by Maxis, a brand new version of the game that first debuted in the late 1980s. Players build cities by mixing residential, industrial and commercial zones, maintaining utilities, roads, airports and other transportation, as well as public services. In other ways, though, greater authenticity makes SimCity a lot more difficult. For one thing, like in real life, your city’s resources are now finite.

Yes, and the number of unique releases I believe were like 20 the 8 years prior to acquisition and then 5 in the next 8 years after acquisition? The Sims (original) and Spore being brain children of Will Wright. Spore was not bad by itself. It required too much user created content (people are lazy), didn't live up to the grand plan that Will had been raving about during development, and the DRM was the biggest reason for so much hate (which would be a decision by the publisher). EA brought strict management and focus to the table, which helps a company stop hemorrhaging money. The problem with EA is that time and again, they have put Q1 results ahead of creativity, innovation, and the customer. C-Suite loves to exploit because they lack the ability to innovate.
They've been able to develop quite the war chest and are able to buy up beloved IPs, exploit them on a 3-6 year plan and then put them out to pasture. This behavior will alienate customers. The real downside is all of the wonderful people who put blood and sweat into these games never get the appreciation they deserve due to some poor leadership level decisions. The problem with EA is that time and again, they have put Q1 results ahead of creativity, innovation, and the customer. Look at the Maxis games though. Before EA: SimCity, basically. And a lot of other Sim titles that failed.
Board of Directors not fond of virtual dollhouses. After EA: Suddenly allowed to make The Sims, one of the most successful game series in history. And like you said, Spore, which Will Wright later wrote about as his failure as he saw it as his job to keep the game from becoming too complex, and overshooting even the goals of the 'cute' team in their internal debate about science vs. And of course they were allowed to complete SC3k since it was almost done, but for some reason the game people most often cite as the best Sim City game is the one that came after that, SC4. So I guess this means SC2013 is well and truly officially dead. I wonder if it was the SC debacle that lead to this.
If so it's a real shame seeing how many were warning them they were going down the wrong path with the always online design and were concerned about the agent based engine even in the AMA long before the release. Oh well - at least the sims team is doing well and perhaps a future SC5 learning from their mistakes and from what will be seen in Cities: Skyline could be made elsewhere in EA building on the gameplay ideals of SC4.

To say EA and Maxis’ SimCity had a earlier this year would be a huge understatement, and it looks like its is also experiencing some issues as Maxis is announcing it’ll miss its originally expected launch date of June 11, and will instead launch in August. Maxis made the announcement on its official website, explaining the reason for SimCity for Mac’s delay. “We have made this tough decision because we do not believe it is ready for primetime yet,” said senior producer Kip Katsarelis in the announcement. “We want to ensure the Mac is a great experience for our players and that is why we are taking more time.” As a way to keep future SImCity Mac mayors happy, Maxis will reward them with the “Launch Park.” Considering just how awful SimCity’s PC launch went, we can’t help but feel completely fine with its Mac version’s delay as long as it means its launch will go smoother than the PC version.
