Hi, all I am selling PCs and always I have to discuss wit customers their software needs. Basically, they ask me to put software on their machines to do particular tasks and I have to explain to them why software costs more than PC itself. So, I want to create a 'cheap software' machine. Easiest way would be to run Linux, but people want Windows. So, they have to buy copy of Windows. No way around this one. Here is a list of software that most people want and free/cheap equivalents I have found.

It is reasonably priced. There is a free antivirus AVG, but found it not very good. Anti Spy stuff. AdAware and Spybot S&D are well known free programs.
Open Office package is free. It is a replacement for Word, Excel and Power Point.
Will read Microsoft files. Unfortunately, there is no alternative for Access or Outlook.

CDBurnerXP Pro is a good choice. It has some limitations, though. In particular, it can not do 1:1 disk copy.
On the other hand, most CD and DVD writers those day come with NERO Express. Are there good aplications for DVD video? Pictures and Photos. I have found PICASA to be of excellent quality. It is free and has tons of features.
Video Editing. Virtual Dub is a very good program PDF. Acrobat reader is free.

I always install it when people don't want to pay for Norton etc. Seems OK to me. How many people actually create their own databases from scratch anyway? I find that most people who have Access don't use it. Those who do need it can pay for it IME.
Of course, Outlook Express. Exactly, and is adequate for many. Nero Vision Express. Avid free DVD. DVDecrypter and DVD shrink. Wouldn't be without it myself. Audacity for wave editing.
The Gimp for photo editing. Zone Alarm or Sygate firewalls.
Winamp media player. Firefox web browser. EAC for CD audio extraction.

You can add an alarm to a note to alert you when you really must take action. The Lite version is free but is restricted to on-screen notes. The $US15.00 (downloadable) version that I use allows you to organise off-screen notes into folders. While checking the URL for this post I came across the Microsoft Partner Pack which includes the Lite version and some other software that might interest your customers.
